Once Upon a Pillow with Rebecca Vizard+Charles Spada
Suite 226-232
Presentation and Book Signing

Charles Spada welcomes Rebecca Vizard to Design Market for a presentation followed by a book signing. An internationally known collector of exquisite antique and vintage fabrics and trims, Rebecca creates luxurious pillows for the design and retail trade.

Through her extensive travels in Europe, Turkey, and South America, Rebecca combs the markets for antique fabrics and trims, on arrival stateside these fabrics and trims are cleaned, sorted by color and patinas, and then organized in stacks for visual stimulation. The arduous process of removing the embroidery is done by hand, carefully snipping each piece away from the fabric using cuticle scissors. Trims and the fabrics are carefully measured, a plan is drawn on the fabric face, and all components of each pillow are gathered together and given to each seamstress for the painstaking work that goes into fabricating each pillow.

In 2015 Rebecca wrote, organized, and published her stunning book Once Upon a Pillow. Join Rebecca and Charles Spada for a rare look at Rebecca's exquisite collection of coveted pillow creations.

Co-host: NEHO & Waterworks
Seminar Room, 5th Floor, Suite 548
A Panel Discussion on Advancing the Design Industry

The Boston Design Center, as part of the Innovation & Design Building in Boston’s innovation hub, is no surprise interested in how businesses will embrace the proliferation of technology to advance and thrive. Our panel is comprised of business stakeholders who have recognized the need for change and subsequently built solutions that will ensure they remain relevant.

In addition to his role as CEO and Creative Director of Waterworks, Peter Sallick is the co-founder and CEO of Dering Hall, Inc., an emerging digital marketplace for design products and services, and the founder of the Design Leadership Network and its marquee event, the Design Leadership Summit. In these roles, Peter blends his entrepreneurial and management success in the design industry with an industry-specific investment orientation.

IvyMark co-founder Lee Rotenberg and her partner saw a broken system and strived to create a solution. IvyMark’s mission is to disrupt the archaic, low-tech industry of interior design by modernizing the workflow, in turn creating efficiency and opportunity for business owners.

As CEO of F. Schumacher & Co., Timur Yumusaklar spearheads and oversees all aspects of business for two iconic design-industry brands, Schumacher and Patterson Flynn Martin. Under his stewardship both companies have been rapidly and dynamically reenergized as leaders in their categories. Prior to his role at Schumacher he drove growth and innovation for European fashion retailer Zalando, implementing strategies that dramatically improved and accelerated the impact, reach and efficiency.

Our moderator is Editor-in-Chief of New England Home, Kyle Hoepner, who has held many roles from typesetter to art director for several business in and outside of the magazine industry. Kyle’s long-held interest in architecture, interiors, and landscape design made him the ideal fit to serve on the launch team of NE Home in 2005.

3:00pm CEU Course: Creativity at Work, Blur the Edges+ASIDNE
Co-host: Duralee
Suite 444, near Century Furniture
Presented by Steelcase

To create a new workplace, we need to blur the edges of what we’ve traditionally considered as the workplace. We’ve blurred the ways we work and when we work, and we believe it’s time to rethink the places in which we work.

We can no longer create the same spaces and expect different results. We need to redefine what the office means and change it so it’s the place people want to come to.

So what’s driving these shifts and what does it mean for work and the workplace? There are a number of reasons why all of this is happening, but here’s what our research and study shows to be the key drivers and disrupters.

Co-host: Design New England

How Design Is Making a Difference

As part of the Boston Design Center’s commitment to salute the brands in our industry that strive to make a difference either globally, locally, or in their workplace culture, Giving Back salutes those selfless members of our community and encourages self-reflection about how we can ensure the growth of our business also means the growth of our footprint on others.

Participants include Merida CEO and owner Catherine Connolly, who, more than twenty years ago, made the decision to manufacture in Fall River, MA, a historic mill town that was once America’s leading textile center. This move helped revitalize the town, bringing jobs to tradespeople and expert craftspeople who deliver superior products to the industry while also ensuring goods are manufactured in the United States.

Joining Connolly will be Jakub Staron, founder of the preeminent rug company J.D. Staron who instituted the Recycled Sari Silk Rugs program in an effort to be sustainable. More than a half a billion women in the word wear saris. Recycling centers in India recover and collect the vintage saris, reprocess them, and generate handspun silk yarn used in Staron’s collection.

Also present will be Olivia Lord, marketing manager of Jewett Farms + Co. Jewett Farms has a number of environmental and philanthropic practices from use of reclaimed materials and water based finishes, to an offcut materials project that benefits a non-profit, and sponsorship and involvement in local youth cycling teams.

Finally, Phillip Jeffries President, Philip Bershad, will speak about why he and his partner felt compelled to introduce PJ Plants, an initiative furthering their Great & Worthy Purpose of “inspiring a more beautiful world… one wall at a time.” PJ Plants, in partnership with The Arbor Day Foundation, promised to plant a new tree for every order of wallcovering placed.

Moderator Gail Ravgiala, Editor of Design New England Magazine, is the perfect finishing touch to this group of do-gooders. Design NE is known in the industry as a resource for aspiring professionals through their proliferation of the Mentor in Design awards. The MIDDIES salute design professionals in interior design, architecture, building, landscape design, landscape architecture and related fields, who share their time, expertise, and wisdom with the next generation, creating a cycle of success that will ensure the industry continues to grow and evolve.
